Hottest Hog on the Planet: Tommy HilPIGer!
First he qualifies for PIGtucky Derby, then he wins it and finally, he wins 6 straight;
Record money raised, bets placed for first “jewel” of the Triple Pig Crown series
At first, it almost seemed absurd. Then it was unlikely. Finally, there was little left to wonder.
That was how things went down this past weekend at PIGlico Downs at Maris Farms. That’s where the first jewel of the Triple PIG Crown series – The PIGtucky Derby – took place on Saturday and a complete longshot not only squeaked in to qualify for the race earlier in the day, he then won it despite being a huge underHOG. Finally, the sleek little black hog finished out the weekend on what may be considered one of the hottest streaks in TPC series history by completing a 6-race winning streak.
“Maybe one of the most dominant performances we’ve seen from the most unlikeliest of thoroughHOGS in all the time I’ve been announcing,” said longtime race announcer and self-proclaimed PIG Whisperer Dennis Riley. “It was impressive, and I think we all know he’s a force to be reckoned with now.”
The humble hog was very reflective following his final race (and win) of the weekend.
“I just felt like I had nothing to lose the entire weekend,” he told a post-race gathering of the pig press. “I’m not here to hog any of the attention as we’re all competing as hard as we can. I’m grateful for the support of my Movers & Shakers SWINE teammates, our team sponsor, Westside Pizza and our event sponsor Wally’s Drive In. And I’m super grateful for our matching sponsor Northwest Motorsports.”
Every dollar bet on the races is donated to Seattle Children’s Hospital and is matched by Northwest Motorsports.
HilPIGer is now the favorite to win the upcoming weekend’s SQUEAKness (second jewel of the TPC series) as well as the overall TPC season series title. He has 8 wins to lead his team and all other pigs. Fastest 15 (of the Bonneville BOARS, presented by Blazing Bagels) and David LetterHAM (Talking Head HOGS, presented by Dillanos Coffee Roasters) both collected a couple of wins over the weekend to remain tied at 6 wins apiece and have both also already qualified for the SQUEAKness. Three other hogs are vying for the fourth and final spot – The Know It All (Bonneville BOARS) and Jimmy FalLOIN (Talking Head HOGS) each have 4 wins and Albert EinSWINE (Movers & Shakers SWINE) has 3. (see PIG NOTES below for the different qualifying scenarios for these three).
For the PIGtucky Derby (first jewel of the Triple PIG Crown series), a record $142 was raised for Seattle Children’s Hospital through the “bets” that race fans placed (in the form of a donation) and 152 bets were placed on the race, another record for the Derby. A total of $473 was raised for the weekend and 515 bets placed – both records as well for this particular weekend.
Every dollar donated is matched by Northwest Motorsports, so it was actually $946. A total of 515 “bets” were placed with HilPIGer collecting the most at 113. LetterHAM had 89 bets placed on him and Fastest 15 had 73.

PIGTUCKY DERBY PLAY BY PLAY: All 4 hogs (Fastest 15, FalLOIN, HilPIGer and LetterHAM) came out of the gates very slow and bunched together. LetterHAM jumped out to a 3-snout length lead around turn one and through turn two, but then stopped; the rest of the group caught up and FalLOIN took a slight lead through turn three. As they approached the fourth turn to the backstretch, HilPIGer started making his move down behind by almost 4-snout lengths and by middle of the backstretch had caught FalLOIN. As HilPIGer approached the final turn, he had opened up a 4-snout length lead. He cruised to the victory with LetterHAM next 3-snouts behind, FalLOIN right on LetterHAM’s tail and Fastest 15 about 5-snout lengths later.
FINAL QUALIFIER SCENARIOS: There will be one final qualifying race on Saturday at noon to fill the last open spot for The SQUEAKness (2 pm, Saturday). if FalLOIN wins and Know It All loses, then FalLOIN is in; if Know It All wins and FalLOIN loses, then Know It All is in; if both win, then FalLOIN earns the spot because by virtue of being the last hog of the two to win previously; if both FalLOIN and Know It All lose and EinSWINE happens to win, EinSWINE is in by virtue of the most recent one to win of the three.
TWO MORE ON THE BOARD: The Go-2-PIG (Bonneville BOARS) and ConHAM O’Brien (Talking Head HOGS) both collected their first wins this past weekend. Only E-LOIN Musk (Movers & Shakers SWINE) and ElLOIN DeGeneres (Talking Head HOGS) still remain winless through the first two weekends.
TOTALS ($ raised, bets placed) THROUGH 2 WEEKENDS: Total number of dollars raised through the first two weekends is $1,278 (includes matching dollars from NWMS) and total number of bets placed is 641.
